For the fall semester of my freshman year I have been in the Gateway to University Honors Program Seminar, at 8:25 am on Tuesday mornings. While it’s a minor struggle to wake up, the class has been a very important component of my first year experience. Before the semester started I took part in the Honors Retreat at Camp Kern, so I was able to get introduced to all the different opportunities that were available to me through UHP. I also learned about honors experiences and the four different thematic areas that those could fall under. However, all this information was very overwhelming to me and I really didn’t know what to do with it. I knew that being in honors was going to help me get involved on campus and present me with many opportunities, but I didn’t know where to get started. And that is where my Gateway class has been so beneficial to me. Even the short powerpoint presentations in the beginning of class that go over the upcoming campus and sporting events are useful to me because I don’t get the information anywhere else. I heard about the Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program in admissions events and the retreat, but again I didn’t know what to do to create this opportunity into a reality. In my Gateway class I was informed about the information session dates, the meet and great, and the application process; and now I have a position as a research assistant in a research lab in Children’s hospital. Additionally, I now understand what to do for some of the aspects of Honors that seemed overwhelming and out of reach in the beginning of the year such as the honors experience proposals, studying abroad, and the learning portfolio. Along with all of the informational things I’ve gained about honors, Gateway has introduced me to the important of reflection and I look forward to using it to make the most of my academic career at UC. I never realized that reflection had any attainable benefits, but assignments such as the life events timeline and our passions helped me realize and formulate into words the values that motivate me in a day-to-day basis and the long term goals I have.

Artifact: One of the most beneficial assignments that I've worked on this semester was the life events timeline. The assignment included a visual, for which I created a small poster for with pictures. But, the reflection of the six different events in my life that have shaped me into who I am today was the most important part of the assignment for me. I never had to sit down and truly reflect on the different events in my life, and having to decide and reflect on the six most important events in my life has helped me realize the values that motivate me and the reasons for the goals I have in my life.

Below is a link to my Honors Experience Mock Proposal for my experience as part of the Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program. I will be an undergraduate research assistant in a lab in Children's Hospital that is researching epilepsy, this experience is important for me to learn lab techniques and how to perform formal research.

Passions are an important key to living a fulfilling life and it is important to reflect and identify what it is you're passionate about. I have reflected on my passion to help others and identified why I am passionate about it. My passion or something that compels me with strong emotion and enthusiasm is the drive to help others. I am passionate about doing my best to make a positive impact on anybody I interact with and to help them in any way possible. You can use the link below to read more.
